WHO ARE WE

Benwu Studio

Founded in New York City 2012 by designer Hongchao Wang and Peng You. In the beginning, the collaboration between the design duo is mainly focused on material experiment and craft research. In 2015 with design partners interior architect Ge Wei and Product Designer Qiyun Deng, Exhibition Designer Penglong Geng join forces, Benwu Studio become a multi-disciplinary design practice with experience in product, interior, and set design. The Studio is based in Shanghai & Beijing and work internationally with clients such as Hermes, Vacheron Constantin, Cassina, Berluti, Isabel Marant, Mini, BMW, Baccarat, Swarovski, Perrier Jouet, Remy Martin, Martell, Lane Crawford,V&A Museum, Comme Moi, Phoenix Television, Common Gender, Particle Fever, Architectural Digest, MFK, SKP, Erdos, and Gaga.

Hongchao Wang
Creative Director / Co-founder

Born and raised in China (1989) and educated in the United States and Switzerland. Hongchao graduated from ECAL Master of Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship under the tuition of Nicolas Le Moigne, Thilo Brunner, Jaime Hayon, and Bethan Wood. Hongchao founded his design practice Benwu Studio in 2014, listed by CNN as one of 5 names that Changed the Chinese design context. Besides running his practice, he is one of the senior board members of the Industrial Design Department of XJTLU.

Peng You
CEO / Co-founder

Born and raised in China ( 1989 ) educated in UK. Peng graduate with a MA in design products at Royal College of Art, London where he studied under the tuition of designer Tord Boontje, Sarah van Gameren , Philippe Malouin and Yuri Suzuki. He had worked in several company such as Sotheby’s, Yamaha, Troika.

Wei Ge
Interior Design Director / Partner

Born and raised in China (1988) educated in UK. Wei graduated with a MA in interior design at Royal College of Art. Where she studied under the tuition of designer Ab. Rogers, Ian Higgins Plunkett Drew and Patrick Macklin. Wei has worked as interior designer in several design studios such as Powell Tuck Associates, Ab. Rogers Design, Standard Architecture and etc.

Penglong Geng
Senior Design Manager / Partner

Born in China in 1988, he began his studies in exhibition design at XAFA. As the chief designer, he has hosted and participated in many large-scale space design projects domestic and foreign, including museums, overseas exhibitions, A-class auto shows, interactive exhibition halls, concept stores, etc., and has a wealth of cooperation with brands, individual customers and government institutions experience. The brands and units he has served include: Huawei, Mercedes-Benz, Alibaba, Jaguar Land Rover, Descente, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (Science and Technology Museum, Natural Museum, Planetarium), Pearl River Piano Group, Hong Kong Li & Fung Group, etc.

Tian Ma
Set Design Director / Partner

Born in China (1989) educated in United States and UK. Tian was mentored by Min Wang (Dean of School of Design at China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Design Director for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Committee, Design Manager and Senior Art Director at Adobe Systems) and graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art with Product Design under the tuition of Bethan Gray, Chris Lefteri and David Scothron. Tian has worked as Graphic, Product and Industrial Designer in UK, United States and China for Vivienne Westwood, Lanpax Design Group, AeroGo and other companies, served several clients such as Boeing, GE, Siemens, Philips, ABB, P&G, Cummins, YORK, Komatsu, Carrier, CASC and etc.

Qiyun Deng
Senior Product Manager / Associate

Born in China in 1983, she began her studies in industrial design at GAFA and worked in A-one Design Studio directed by Prof. Zhenyu Shi, which collaborated firmly with local enterprises. Qiyun attended the Master in Product Design in ECAL, Switzerland and concluded with distinction in 2013 with her diploma project Graft, a series of bio-plastic tableware. This work has became a representitive of sustainable design and has participated in many worldwide exhibitions and publications.
